NextraOrdinary© is about every-day people

Shaun Sinclair, Program Head, General Insurance and Risk Management Program, BCIT.

NextraOrdinary is not about enormous change and record breaking experiences and expeditions.  It is about taking steps towards your Next Extraordinary, no matter how big or small that might be.  Take action and make something extraordinary happen.

Shaun Sinclair was determined to step outside his family’s tradition of teaching and preaching to make some big money in business. “I remember thinking that there was no way I was ever going to do either of those things; I was going to make some money in business and chose insurance as a path to greatness.” He completed his insurance designation and an MBA from Simon Fraser University.

While working in a very well paid insurance job, and on his way to achieving his big business job, Shaun could not ignore the incredible feeling he had when given the opportunity to teach others. “Once I completed my first professional designation I began teaching some of the courses and really enjoyed it. The work was essentially a volunteer position, but seeing the students obtain their designations and follow their career was / is a very rewarding experience”.

Serendipitously, the opportunity arose at the perfect time for Shaun to become a department head of a new insurance and risk management program at BC Institute of Technology, but required a significant cut in pay.  Shaun realized that time is worth a lot more than money, and accepted the lower paid position. “I enjoyed teaching and I love coming to work every day. I am making far less money than I was in my corporate job, but am significantly happier than I have ever been. If I knew a full time teaching role would be this rewarding and that I would be happy, I would have started teaching long ago – after all, it’s in my blood.”
